Moises Henriques Announces Retirement from Sydney Sixers and New South Wales After 22-Year Career

Moises Henriques, the veteran Australian all-rounder, has officially called time on his domestic career, ending a stellar 22-year stint with New South Wales and the Sydney Sixers. The 39-year-old leaves the game as one of Australia’s most respected and accomplished domestic cricketers having built a legacy on leadership, consistency and resilience.

Henriques, who has been a regular in the Sydney Sixers line-up since the inception of the Big Bash League, has confirmed he will not feature in Australia’s domestic competitions after being overlooked for a contract in the upcoming BBL season. He had chances to go on playing for other franchises but the seasoned campaigner decided enough was enough and to retire rather than turn out for another club.

Henriques went on to become the most capped player in Australian domestic cricket, playing 420 games across formats for New South Wales and the Sixers. He has won three Big Bash League titles, several domestic trophies and played 44 international matches for Australia in Tests, ODIs and T20Is. The star played in the first BBL final, hitting a match-winning 70 to lead the Sixers to their first title.

Henriques was born in Portugal but moved to Australia as a child. He made a huge contribution off the field as well. His openness about his struggles with mental health helped ignite vital conversations within cricket and encouraged many athletes to reach out when they needed to.

Henriques’ Australian domestic chapter may be over but he is not calling it quits from cricket altogether. He is likely to be part of Portugal’s squad for upcoming T20 World Cup qualifiers and is open to playing in overseas leagues.

Looking back at the decision Henriques thanked his teammates, coaches and fans who supported him throughout his career. Australian cricket says goodbye to one of its most influential domestic stars and his impact on and off the field will surely live on for years to come.
